Addis Ababa January 05/2019 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said his government has given attention to employing education to realize “the Ethiopia we envision.”

A half-day National Teachers Conference in which about 3,700 primary, secondary and preparatory school teachers drawn from around the country took part was held today.

Abiy told the participants that proper emphasis is given in the comprehensive national reform to unleash the significant impact of education which is vital in transforming the country.

“Our decision to make two ministries responsible for education while downsizing other ministries demonstrates the determination in tapping the sector,” he stated.

According to the premier, inadequate inputs, low wage, unequal benefits, and inconsistencies in promotions are the major challenges that are obstructing the sector from achieving the desired goal.

The PM, however, hastened to add that the recent education reform attempts to address the major issues in the sector; though this cannot be brought overnight.

Ethiopia, with a total of over 29 million students, needs to harness the priceless potential, according to Abiy.

“You are the ones who open up the hopes and dreams of your students” and note that “there will never be a darkness that cannot be won by light as ignorance by knowledge.”
