Ethiopia Advocated Peace, Security as UN Security Council Member, Says Permanent Representative

Addis Ababa January 02/2019 Ethiopia has successfully advocated for the prevalence of peace and security at regional, continental and global levels during its two-year non-permanent membership at the UN Security Council, Ethiopia’s Permanent Representative to UN Taye Atsekeselassie said.

Briefing journalists here today, the Permanent Representative to UN noted that the lifting of Eritrea’s sanction, revitalization of the peace process in South Sudan, strengthening AMISOM and extending UN peacekeeping mission in Abyei were among the achievements.

He underscored that Ethiopia’s advocacy to ensure peace and stability has won remarkable diplomatic acceptance at the global arena.

The Permanent Representative to UN pointed out that the measure to accept the Ethio-Eritrea peace deal was recognized and appreciated globally.

Taye said “the peace deal was considered as one of the most conspicuous events that took place in the continent.”

According to him, Ethiopia’s pragmatic stance on peace and security has not only won the attention of the international community but also respect and recognition.

“By making peace with its neighbor Eritrea, Ethiopia firmly demonstrated its strong stand for the prevalence of peace and stability,” Taye noted.

Besides proactively engaging in conflict preventive mechanisms, Ethiopia continues to be at the forefront of peacekeeping missions of the UN, he stated.

Asked about the recent closure of Ethio-Eritrea border, the Permanent Representative said it is only to set the formal ways of bilateral relations.

Furthermore, he stressed that “the peace agreement is irreversible as there is no way that either of the countries could possibly ever try the costly ‘no war no peace’ situation.”

Ethiopia served as non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council for the third time from 2017-2018.
