Addis Ababa October 08/2018 Ethiopian Human Rights Commissioner Addisu Gebregziabher appreciated the firm direction set by President Mulatu Teshome today to ensure the rule of law in the country. In an exclusive interview with ENA, the Human Rights Commissioner said the government has demonstrated decisiveness towards ensuring rule of law and sustainable peace and stability that are timely and crucial. “It is crucial that the government decided to take strong and bold moves as this is necessary for Ethiopia’s multidimensional development,” he pointed out. In his opening speech to the House of People’s Representatives (HPR) and House of Federation today, President Mulatu Teshome said in recent years there has been confusion between freedom and anarchy, which led to destruction of property, mass displacement, and lawlessness in general. “Against this backdrop, it is clear that the fate of a country without laws is social crisis, internecine, and even fragmentation”, the president stressed. Mulatu added that “administrative agencies should give special attention to ensure the safety of any individual.” According to Human Rights Commissioner Addisu, the government’s decisiveness to maintain rule of law demonstrates the desire and commitment for sustainable peace and economic development. “The very essence of the direction towards ensuring rule of law calls for the HPR, democratic institutions like the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission and other governmental institutions to join hands and work in unison”, he added. President Mulatu emphasized that “due attention will be given so that government can own institutions that are trusted by the public and to reinforce the existing ones.”
