Ethiopia Gained Political, Diplomatic Achievements at UNGA, Says MoFA Spokesperson

Addis Ababa October 04/2018 Ethiopia has gained remarkable political and diplomatic achievements at the 73rd Session of the UN General Assembly, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The delegation, which was led by Foreign Affairs Minister Workneh Gebyehu, participated in some 50 bilateral and multilateral meetings that focused on Ethiopia’s policies and strategies and the reform underway in the country. Spokesperson of the ministry, Meles Alem said the minister addressed six high-level general debates, engaged with a number of world leaders, and met with foreign ministers of neighboring countries. He has also reportedly signed bilateral agreement with the foreign minister of Ecuador to establish a political consultation forum and waiver of visas. FM Workneh briefed the General Assembly about the extensive reform being undertaken in Ethiopia, and the rapprochement between Ethiopia and Eritrea in particular, the spokesperson stated. The minister also called for international recognition and support to expand the process and enhance regional economic integration. Member countries have also supported African Union standpoints that were consistent with international principles and standards to ensure the regional, continental and internationally shared responsibilities that Ethiopia championed and recognized during the assembly deliberations, it was learned. The spokesperson of the ministry stated that Ethiopia’s generosity in hosting refugees from neighboring countries, and its leading and active participation in peacekeeping were praised during the General Assembly session.
