PM Abiy, President Kenyata Urge for Peaceful Power Transfer in Africa

Addis Ababa May 08/2018 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta urged African leaders to play their role for peaceful transfer of power in the continent. Following a bilateral meeting at the State House in Nairobi, the leaders showed their keenness to play role to nurture the culture of peaceful transfer of power. The two leaders have agreed to dedicate most of their time to nurture the culture of smooth transfer of power in their respective countries and radiate a positive sprit among Africans. Speaking at the occasion Prime Minister Abiy said Kenya and Ethiopia have shown that peaceful transfer of power is possible in Africa. According to Abiy, continuity is very important for Africa, urging that "incumbent leaders to play their role in permanence of smooth transfer of power across the continent." “Now in Kenya as well in my country Ethiopia, we have shown for the public that peaceful transfer of power is possible. This must also be nurtured to the next generation that the emerging one should know about history, about our vision and they have also work hard to realize the vision of our founding father that would take and connect Africa to the next level.” The Premier has been insisting in his various public speeches that the tendency of leaders and officials in craving to power is an obstacle to democratization and smooth transfer of power. Recently, Prime Minister Abiy announced that Ethiopia will limit the term of office for the Prime Minister to two terms. He made clear that seizing power for lifetime has come to “a dead end in Ethiopia”. He also promised to incorporate the restriction into the country’s constitution. The leaders have also emphasized on the need to realize the vision of founding fathers of the OAU into reality for the benefit of the people of the continent. Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta also stressed on the need for African countries to achieve and ultimately bring to reality the vision of the founding fathers. The founding father of Africa including Jomo Kenyatta, Emperor Hailesilase I, Kwame Nkrumah and Julius Nyerere had laid the foundation for African unity and future growth. President Kenyata insisted that unity is the key element towards the prosperity of Africa. “The future of this content lies on our unity, our ability to invest together for the future prosperity of our people. I have full confidence we shall be able to achieve and ultimately bring the vision of our founding fathers to reality.”
