DPM & FM Holds Talks with New WFP Office Director, Representative to AU and UNECA

Addis Ababa May 20/2021 (ENA) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Demeke Mekonnen held discussion today with Hameed Nuru, the newly appointed World Food Program (WFP) Office Director and Representative to AU and UNECA.

During the discussion, Deemeke congratulated WFP for winning the Nobel Peace Prize for 2020 for its efforts to support people who are endangered due to man-made conflicts and natural disasters.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he also praised the role played by World Food Program (WFP) in providing humanitarian assistance to needy people in Tigray by refraining from unnecessarily politicizing the matter.

Demeke also talked about addressing the needs of people in the first and second rounds of humanitarian support in Tigray and the plan to carry out the third one soon.

He finally called on the international community to provide the necessary support to adequately address the needs of affected people in the region.

Nuru said on his  part that he appreciated the ongoing support from government institutions in Ethiopia, adding that WFP will continue to work together with the relevant bodies in fulfilling its responsibilities.

He also explained the organization's collaborative experience with Ministry of Education in registering encouraging results in the Home-grown School Feeding Program.
