Political Parties Urged to Continue Constructive Engagement During Post-Election Period

Addis Ababa, May 19 /2021 (ENA) All political parties participating in the upcoming general election should continue their active engagement in the process of building democracy after the election, according to Ministry of Peace.

Peace Minister Advisor Moges Demisse said at the conclusion of the three-day consultative forum organized by the ministry that all political parties participating in the election are expected to continue their constructive involvement to maintain peace in the country after the election.

According to him, the post-election period should be given equal attention to the pre-election preparation.

“Whether victorious or losers, all political parties should continue their role in constructive political struggle this way so as to build democracy and sustain peace in the country,” he stressed.

Federal Attorney General Gedion Timothewos said on the occasion that this year's election is different from the previous ones as the country has effectively managed to re-establish an independent electoral board.

Re-establishing free electoral board is the first successful move in the process of conducting effective election, he added.

However, he said all stakeholders should play their role to make the process successful before and after the election.

Professor Kassahun Berhanu, a panelist, on his part said that the post-election period will give a space for the winner party to establish strong democratic institutions.

According to him, post-election period is very crucial as the pre-election period to bring change in the country.

Concluding the event, Peace Minister Muferiat Kamil said the election that will be held soon is very crucial as it is going to be take place during the country’s transitional period.

An effective election is the binder of democratic transitional period, she said, adding that every stakeholder should therefore contribute toward maintaining democracy in the country during the election.
