Addis Ababa, April 3/2021/ENA/ The introduction of cloud seeding technology in Ethiopia will have a significant impact on agriculture and basin development, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said.
It is to be recalled that the premier announced about the realization of technology of converting clouds into rains in the country to the House of People’s Representatives as trials in Gojjam and Shoa were successful.
Following the announcement, promotion of cloud seeding technology was launched at the Entoto Observatory Research Center.
During the occasion, Abiy said the technology is crucial for countries like Ethiopia that are investing lots of resources in building power and irrigation dams.
By empowering river basins, the use of irrigation development projects and dams could be maximized, he noted.
Due to the increase in population and demand for agricultural land, the technology is very important for Ethiopia to make the dry areas fertile and productive, PM Abiy stated.
Innovation and Technology State Minister Ahmedin Mohammed said the world is in a technology revolution and artificial intelligence as well as nanotechnology are currently in use in many countries around the world.
He pointed out that Ethiopia has, however, a long way to go in using such technology to develop its natural resources.
Of late the government has been giving priority to technology and innovation by launching a satellite a year ago, he added.
Converting clouds into rains is part of this project, the state minister stated, adding that using the technology to get adequate rain needs immediate and collaborative actions without wasting time.
