Exiled Orthodox Church Synod Return Home

Addis Ababa July 01/2018 The exiled Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Synod returned to Addis Ababa this afternoon, symbolizing the reunion of the Synods of the Church. The Synod of the Church has split into two since Abune Merkorios, the 4th Patriarch and some members of the Synod fled to the U.S 27 years ago. The return of the patriarch symbolizes the re-union of the two synods. Government officials, members of the Synod, representatives of various religious institutions as well followers of the Church have welcomed the Patriarch and members of the exiled Synod. The exiled Synod led by Abune Merkorios has returned home following the mediation that took place over the past weeks. Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed has played a significant role during the reconciliation process aimed at uniting the Holy Synod of the Church. Based on the agreement, the Holy Synod led by His Holiness Abune Merkorios, returned from the United States together with the Prime Minister today. The unification and reconciliation ceremony among the two Synods was officially held in Washington DC in the presence of Prime Minister Abiy during his visit to the U.S. early this weekend. Upon the agreement reached, Abune Merkorios will serve the church by leading prayers and blessings, while the 6th Patriarch Abune Mathias will carry out administrative functions. The reconciliation and unification of the two Synods of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church would play a major role in ensuring of the peace and unity of the country.
