
Addis Ababa July 01/2018 Addis Ababa Mayor Diriba Kuma announced today that agro-processing industrial zone will be constructed to permanently solve the problems of more than 5,000 household because of development schemes around the capital.
In a press briefing he held today, the Mayor said “the project which will cost a total of 420 million birr will go operational in not more than four months.”
According to Diriba, the project will play a significant role not only in changing the livelihood of the farmers but also stabilizing the market in the city.
Poultry farm, milk and dairy products processing as well as animal fattening are among the businesses to be opened for the displaced farmers, it was learned.
The Mayor pointed out that the city administration has been providing meal for more than 2,087 displaced farmers by allocating a total of 52 million birr.
“Over 5,997 jobless youth from among the displaced have already been identified and will receive specially tailored technical and vocational training”, he added.
Diriba is confident that the project will sustainably alleviate the economic and psychological problems of the farmers; but he was quick to add that the administration “will give accommodation to farmers and help them lead decent livelihood before displacing them due to development schemes.”
The current project was implemented by learning from similar experiences of Vietnam and China as well as conducting series of researches over the last four years.
