Mammoth Rally Encourages Democratization, Galvanize Unity, Say Scholars

Addis Ababa June 30/2018 The mammoth rally held in support of Prime Minister Abiy’s achievements last Saturday would invigorate the democratization process and galvanize the unity of the Ethiopian people, scholars said. Academics who talked to ENA said the reform brought by the PM has motivated the public so much that they came out in masse to acknowledge his efforts and to express support for the steps to be taken ahead. History Professor Tesema Ta'a of Addis Ababa University said, “Recognizing every party, recognizing every nation and nationality as well as people, acknowledging their differences and unity is extremely important as it helps to move Ethiopia forward and make it great.” “Change takes a lot of time, but those who are pro-political change and those who understood the complexity of the problem of the political situation in this country, like Prime Minister Abiy and others, have been doing very important job in galvanizing the support of the Ethiopian people from the grassroots level,” he elaborated. Furthermore, the professor noted that the leadership has been acknowledged and accepted by the public because of the significant changes it has brought in the country within a short period. The leadership also understood the atrocities perpetrated against political prisoners who wanted to express their beliefs and share ideas they thought were very critical and useful to the leaders of the country. Professor Tesema observed that the rally was organized by those who had demands, the youngsters in particular who were crying loud for change during the last three years. The huge rally that attracted millions from only Addis Ababa and the environs, according to Professor Tesema, is a “showcase of the turning point in the history of the country.” The scholar noted that the past leadership could not stop corruption, nepotism and theft. “I think the new leader would come up with reform which is vital not only for Ethiopia but also for the Horn of Africa.” He said the tragic event that occurred during the peaceful rally was carefully orchestrated by knowledgeable people who have access to weapons. “I think it is very important in the 21st century to struggle using the mind, generate creative thinking, news ideas and approaches that are valuable in bringing development, change and harmony,” the professor stressed. The historian pointed out that scholars should contribute to these ideals by carrying out research and producing students that understand development, democracy, and democratic values. Political Science and International Relations Professor Kassahun Berhanu of Addis Ababa University said the premier has embarked on series of reforms that contribute to peace and stability and forging the unity of the people of Ethiopia. Commenting about the rally as “unprecedented in the history of the country”, Professor Kassahun said, “although, we cannot say that everything that has been accomplished was done within the short period he assumed office, what is happing is significant in terms of reforming the mode of operation of the government, dispensing justice and nurturing hope in the mindset of citizens at large.” "The Ethiopian people have harbored hopes from the promises made by the prime minister, not only promises but practical actions that he has taken since he came to power, like releasing of political prisoners, like reaching out to the opposition both at home and abroad by stating that the spirit of social healing and national reconciliation should prevail," Professor Kassahun added. The professor stressed that emphasizing Ethiopian unity, the coming together of Ethiopians for a better future on firm foundation is crucial for the current society and future generations. "The public and every one of us at our respective work places should support the initiative being taken by our prime minister by discharging our responsibility, discharging civic duty and what is expected from us,” the professor noted. A Social Anthropologist at the Social Science College of Addis Ababa University, Dr. Getaneh Mehari said, “I think the reform being taken by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his government is very amazing.” “I believe that this change is a great chance for Ethiopia as it is based on positive thinking and principles. It would be exemplary for African countries. Though this change freed us from chaos, however, there might be obstacles ahead,” Dr. Getaneh warned. Every individual, organization as well as political parties have a responsibility to support in sustaining this progress by reducing conflict and hatred, he stated. Giving more emphasis to positive things is important rather than to hatred and gossip that would lead the country to destruction, according to the Social Anthropologist. Dr. Getaneh finally noted that there might be many obstacles when change comes and this can only be overcome with open mindedness and far sightedness.
