IGAD Extra-Ordinary Session Successful, Says MoFA Spokesperson
Addis Ababa June 22, 2018 Extra-Ordinary Session of IGAD on South Sudan was successful and it paves the way to bring lasting peace and stability to the country, according to Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). Briefing journalists today, MoFA Spokesperson Meles Alem said IGAD has decided to lift Riek Machar’s house arrest so that he can directly participate in the peace process. Referring to the Bridging Proposal, Meles said the conflicting parties have more or less agreed on the proposal yesterday. IGAD foreign ministers will have a meeting on the sidelines of African Union 31th Summit which will be held at Nouakchot, Mauritania, to make final decision on some unsettled issues regarding the Bridging Proposal. One of the issues not yet resolved is the proposal on maintaining the states government structure which was created by President Salva Kirr. In this respect, IGAD has established an investigating commission to study the issue. 
Meles noted that the media have been reiterating that South Sudan’s situation is getting from bad to worse owing to lack of punitive measures against violators of the peace process in South Sudan. In line with this, IGAD is finalizing punitive measures to be taken against any group that violate the peace deal, he said, and added that IGAD has decided to discuss ways of implementing the regimes and the discussion report needed for the next session. Salva Kirr had an "eye to eye" contact with his rival Riek Macher, who has been under house arrest in South Africa since 2016. The Spokesperson revealed that President Salva Kirr and Riek Macher will hold meetings in Nairobi and Khartoum.
