Ethiopian Christians Marking Holy Friday

Addis ababa, April 17/2020( ENA) Ethiopian Christians are celebrating Good Friday in seclusion, the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, through various church services.

Most churches stood vacant where usually filled with emotional processions were quiet.

As an alternative, Christians across the country commemorated Good Friday behind closed doors due to the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

Churches in Addis Ababa including the Holy Trinity Cathedral and Bole Holy Savior, the hymning of few clerics echoed softly through the heavy microphones, as small numbers of people genuflect outside to pray. 

Holy Friday, also known Good Friday, is a holiday observed primarily by followers of Christianity commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary.

The holiday is observing through a daylong fasting and prays to commemorate the suffering and crucifixion of Jesus Christ particularly among the Ethiopian Orthodox Church followers.

The week long observance that starts at Palm Sunday and ends at Holy Saturday is part of the 55 days of fasting season dedicated for some activities of Jesus Christ.

The faithful observes the day through a daylong bowing down repeatedly requesting for forgiveness from God.

Following the outbreak of corona virus, Christians are following the Holy Friday ceremony take place at church through live-stream online.

Followers pray and repent for their sins by fasting until 6pm while some are even continue to abstain from any kind of food and drink till Easter Sunday.
