New Generation Spurred to Recur Courage of Forefathers’ Heroism in Peace Building

ENA,March 2/2020 Participants of the 124th anniversary of the Victory of Adwa urged the new generation to recur the courage of forefathers’ heroism in peace building, unity and poverty alleviation.

This morning, huge gatherings of residents, senior government officials and renowned figures as well as patriots colorfully celebrated the day in front of Menelik II square in the capital Addis Ababa.

A seven year-old student, Bitania Mesfin, who stood in line over Menelik II square in the capital Addis Ababa with new patriotic clothes, described the victory of Adwa as the “Pride of Africa”.   

“My forefathers have won the battle against the Italian invaders in Adwa. That is why I am in these patriotic clothes to honor the victory,” she said.

Drawing a lesson from forefathers, Bitania said “I am studying hard to help my country progress forward and keep my country safe and peaceful.”

March 2nd is Demelash Kassa’s birthday who is also celebrating the 124th of the victory of Adwa at Menelik II square in Addis alongside with his friends.

“I was born the same day that the Battle of Adwa has been concluded with massive victory for black race and I am so happy for these coincidences,” Demelash said.

The victory of Adwa should be persistent in the bid to sustain peace and stability on the top of poverty alleviation efforts across the country, he noted.   

Colonel Alemayehu Kumsa on his part said he has been attending annual ceremony of the victory of Adwa for several years and is becoming more colorful.

“The discipline of the huge youth and residents gathered here is amazing which shows love to country and its history. Such events help to build a peaceful country,” he added.

The battle of Adwa in March 2, 1896 against Italian colonizers has showcased utmost unity of Ethiopians and marks the first black victory against a colonial power in Africa, initiating other freedom fighters to struggle towards independence.

Ethiopia annually marks the victory of Adwa on March 2 nationwide.
