Over 5,000 Ex-combatants Reintegrated into Society in Tigray Region

Addis Ababa December 19/2024 (ENA)—Some 5,728 ex-combatants in Tigray region have reintegrated into the society, the National Rehabilitation Commission (NRC) disclosed.

The Commission has embarked on a disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR) program for 75,000 former combatants in Tigray Region during the last month.

As a result, 6,625 former combatants have entered the rehabilitation and training centers so far, and 5,728 have been reintegrated into society, it was learned.

Director of Program Planning and Monitoring at the National Reconstruction Commission, Colonel Belay Abebe pointed out that the Mekelle and Edaga Hamus centers are receiving and training ex-combatants.

The director also indicated that additional efforts are also underway to launch a third rehabilitation and training center in the Adwa area of Ethiopian Tigray Region.

Currently, Ethiopia is implementing a vigorous Disarmament, Demobilization, and Reintegration program.

Particularly, the DDR program in the Tigray region decisively focuses on transitioning ex-combatants into civilian life, aiming directly at the root causes of violence.

Its success hinges on reintegrating these individuals into society through robust economic and social support, including education, vocational training, and essential employment opportunities.
