PM Abiy, Trade Steering Committee Evaluate Progress in Ease of Doing Business

Addis Ababa ENA July 23/2019 Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met with the National Trade Steering Committee today to evaluate the progress made on ease of doing business in the country during the past few months and chart out the way forward. 

The premier and the committee reviewed the medium and long-term goals set to improve Ethiopia’s ease of doing business ranking.

The National Trade Steering Committee is established to facilitate services that would make the country competitive internationally, improve productivity and create conducive environment for investment.

During the occasion, it was stated that eight proclamations and regulations that need legal revisions were reviewed by the steering committee and have entered implementation during the past six months.

Investment Commissioner Abebe Abebayehu said the proclamations on trade license registration and the securing of loan by giving assets as collateral have been approved.

Furthermore, 40 administrative legal reforms, including efficient asset registration and creation of transparent construction permit system in Addis Ababa  have been implemented, the commissioner stated.

He elaborated that the task of converting legal reforms into institutional reform is among the first of the mid-term plan to facilitate ease of doing business.

A commercial law that replaces the 60 years old law will be issued within the coming 4 months, it was pointed out.

According to Abebe, over 3 million jobs will be created by facilitating ease of doing business in Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said the reason for creating investment opportunity is to create  many jobs and reduce poverty.

He said institutional reforms will be undertaken to create institutions that understand and implement reforms, besides  revising laws that helps to facilitate ease of doing business.
