General Attorney, Lawyers Discuss to Improve the Revised Draft Law Governing Legal Practice

Addis Ababa May 1/2019 The Federal Attorney General held discussions today with lawyers on the revised draft law governing legal practices in Ethiopia.

Opening the discussion, Attorney General, Birhanu Tsegaye said the need to revise the existing law is to ensure the rule of law and enhance the legal system of the country.

He affirmed the government’s commitment for the realization the law in the process of improving the legal system of the country.

The Federal Attorney General organized working groups, which are mainly of lawyers, in charge of assessing inputs to upgrade the draft law before its ratification.  

Tewodros Mihret, member of the working group assessing the draft law, said it’s crucial to revise the existing law governing legal practices to ensure the rule of law in the country.

The draft law includes several legal issues such as independence of the profession, setting of clear standards to ensure quality service, mobility of advocates, continuous legal training, he stated.

Moreover, he said the draft law states quality standards of entry into legal practices, standardization of requirement for legal practice across the nation and models of the regulation to be enhanced and widen.

Participants of the discussion appreciated the government’s move to revise the law by identifying serious gaps in the existing legal practices.

They recommend for thorough discussions with lawyers and pertinent stakeholders to further develop the draft law.
