High-Level AU Commission, USA Dialogue Discusses Strategic Cooperation

Addis Ababa November 29/2018 A high-level dialogue aimed at enhancing strategic cooperation between African Union Commission and the United States was held at the African Union today. Briefing journalists, Deputy Chairperson of AUC Kwesi Quartey said the dialogue is on strategic cooperation towards the implementation of common goals related to Africa’s development and integration. The dialogue focuses on US-AUC cooperation on economic growth, trade, investment as well as advancing peace and security, he added. Quartey stated that strengthening democratic institutions, good governance and creating opportunities for the development of Africa are also among the focus areas. US Assistant Secretary Tibor Nagy said on his part US-AU collaboration has been laying the ground for a stronger Africa for many years, and has done so through a collaborative sprit and clear priorities. Promoting economic growth, trade and investment are the top priorities of US, which is also critical to Africa’s future success, according to the assistant secretary. Nagy added that “we must begin now to create strong platforms in all AU states to encourage foreign investment that will result in good jobs and opportunities for their young people.” According to him, the US and Africa have made progress in expanding trade that supports Continental Free Trade Area. He revealed that “the US is working on all aspects of the Africa Peace and Security Architecture, including maritime, border security and mitigating trafficking in arms, drugs and wildlife.
