State of Emergency Essential to Curb Looming Dangers, False Media Narratives: Legal Scholars

Addis Ababa November 5/2021 (ENA) The state of emergency decaled this week will definitely help Ethiopia to curb the grave threats posed by the terrorist TPLF and false media narratives, legal scholars said.

Speaking to ENA, the legal and human rights expert Mesud Gebeyehu said there are grounds for  the governments of Ethiopia to declare a state of emergency because there are tangible threats to the integrity and national sovereignty of the country.

“There are grounds for the Government of Ethiopia to declare a state of emergency. One of the reasons is the advance of the terrorist TPLF in some parts of the country.”

Moreover, the terroristic ambitions of the group are now supported by false media narratives and fake news propagated through Western media outlets to disintergate Ethiopia, the legal expert added.

“We have even been watching the international media disseminate the information that TPLF would very soon control Addis Ababa and other parts of the country,” Mesud noted.   

According to him, the framing of the international media has proved that the terrorist TPLF is working in close cooperation with foreign powers that desire to weaken and destroy Ethiopia.

The state of emergency will help the government to take any measures that cannot be averted by the regular law enforcement mechanisms against the terrorist group TPLF and its allies, Mesud pointed out.  

Noting that there have been fears that the declaration of state of emergency would undermine the alreday deteriorated security and human rights in Ethiopia, the legal expert stressed that the government should continuously communicate with the international community to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.   

Debarq University law instructor, Mekuanent Dube said on his part that the state of emergency will ensure the sovereignty of the country as well as peace and security by destroying the terrorist TPLF in the near future.  

The lecturer explained that the state of emergency would create enabling environment to the security forces to carry out their missions freely.

He strongly believes that the state of emergency will help meet the survivial campaign within a short period of time.

It is to be recalled that the House People's Representatives has approved a national state of emergency proclamation that will remain in force for six months.
