Creating Shared Vision Crucial to Sustain Ongoing Reform: Scholar
Addis Ababa, April 2/2021/ENA/ Creating a shared vision among the public is crucial to maintain comprehensive reforms being underway in the country, a scholar noted at the inauguration ceremony of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s three years in office.
Presenting a paper that focused on major achievements and challenges of the reform, East African Policy Research Institute Deputy Director-General Birhanu Lenjiso said several achievements have been registered in many areas through the reform initiatives undertaken by the prime minister during the past three years.
According to him, the previous administration exercised repressive rule which led to social movements across the country, triggering the reform.
Among the many successes, the normalization of relations with Eritrea after 20 years deadlock was applauded by the international community.
In addition, various measures have been taken in the country, especially in widening the political space, revising legal documents and policies, the scholar said.
Despite the achievements, controversial historical occurrences and undeveloped political culture as well as the unfinished nation building process have become challenges, Birhanu observed.
Therefore, creating shared vision among the public is crucial to sustain the reform and move forward for better future.
“We can’t afford to lose this chance. We have to realize the reform by paying any sacrifice,” he stressed, adding that any transition from dictatorship to democracy is expected to bring many challenges.
Some of the participants raised their concerns about the need of collaboration and commitment to solve current security challenges which must be given priority by implementing rule of law.
Oromia Regional State Deputy Chief Administrator, Chaltu Sani recalled on her part that Ethiopia was in a difficult political and economic crisis shortly before the prime minister took office.
He managed the crisis by bringing about reforms that include forgiveness and brotherhood rather than using the formal legal system, she noted.
