Gov’t to Release More Than 4,000 Prisoners to Prevent COVID-19

ENA,March 25/2020 The Attorney General announced today that it will grant pardon to more than 4,000 prisoners to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

In a press conference she held today, Attorney General Adanech Abeebee said the government decided to release the prisoners in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

She stated that the prisoners pardoned include those convicted of minor crimes and sentenced up to 3 years as well as others put under one-year probation.

The amnesty covers nursing mothers and pregnant women and prisoners who were not involved in murder.

All the prisoners granted pardon will be screened for coronavirus before they join the community, it was learned.
