Adwa Victory a Heroic Symbol of Independence for Africans: Minister

ENA March 2/2020 The victory of Adwa is a heroic symbol of independence for Africans and beyond, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hirut Kassaw said. 

The 124^th Anniversary of the victory of Adwa colorfully marked today in the northern town of Adwa, Tigrai Regional State.

On her remarks, Culture and Tourism Minister Hirut Kassaw said the victory of Adwa set off the spirit of liberty and independence in Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The victory is a symbol of heroism that encouraged African people who were under the rule of European colonial powers to decide on their destiny and build strong unity in the fight against colonialism, she noted.

Hirut pointed out that the victory of Adwa will be transcended to the next generation to stand together for common vision.

Deputy Chief Administrator of Tigrai Regional State, Debretsion Gebremichael said the victory of Adwa which has significant role at national and international level was heralded hope for all black races.

“As we are celebrating the 124^th anniversary of the victory of Adwa, we have to struggle to evade meddling of other countries in our sovereignty,” he stressed.

The recent intervention of foreign powers in domestic issues especially on Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) should be resolute vigilantly, he added.

Debretsion re-emphasized on the need to draw a lesson from Wuchale Treaty signed by Menelik II and the Italian government on May 2, 1889, which was the immediate cause for the battle of Adwa.

The battle of Adwa is a good lesson to stay away from the meddling of foreign powers as Ethiopia is a sovereign state, he said.

African Union Commissioner for Economic Affairs, Victor Harison on his part said that victory of Adwa is not only Ethiopia’s victory, but also an African victory and beyond.

The day is not reminiscence in the past but it remains in the heart of Africans since it is an Ethiopian victory that ran against colonial rule in Africa, he noted.
