Addis Ababa December 03/2018 Nation wide immunization campaign aimed at preventing cervical cancer is launched by Ministry of Health.
The campaign, which began in Addis Ababa today, is expected to cover more than 1 million teenage girls.
Given before a girl or woman is exposed to the virus, this vaccine can prevent cervical cancer in women.
More than 7,000 mothers and teenage girls are annually exposed to the cancer in Ethiopia, and 5,000 of those die from the disease, it was learned.
During the launching of the campaign, Health Minister Dr. Amir Aman said the vaccine to be given in two rounds within six months will protect over 70 percent young girls from cervical cancer.
He added that only 1.1 million will receive the vaccine this Ethiopian year as it is expensive, though effective.
