AU to Impose Sanction, Total Suspension of Non-Compliance Countries

Addis Ababa November  18/2018 African heads of states and government have adopted a battery of sanction to impose member states that are non-compliant to the 0.2 percent levy, AUC Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said.

The sanction goes up to total suspension of member states from the African Union, Moussa Faki indicated.

Briefing journalists today, Chairperson Faki said though Africa had the sanction regime but it was not effective so far.

Stating that contributions of member states stand at 50 percent, Mahamat asks “how do expect the commission to implement its annual program when you have contributions amount only 50 percent.”

According to the Chairperson, the total suspension forbids member countries from participating in the AU’s summit.

“The first responsibility of member states is to pay their contributions,” he said and added “for relying on others have out lived its time.”

Furthermore, he said that strengthening the sanction regime on non-compliant countries will ensure the sustainability and predictability of the financial contribution.
