Addis Ababa October 12/2018 Ethiopian Maintenance & Engineering Services, the largest and oldest aircraft maintenance centre in Africa, has become the first in the continent in repairing the GEnx Engine, the Ethiopian Airlines told ENA.
The GEnx (General Electric Next-generation) is an advanced jet engine in production by GE Aviation for the Boeing 787 and 747-8.
The first GEnx engine repaired at the facility makes the airline among the very few GEnx Repair shops in the General Electric MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) global network.
Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam said the national flag carrier will make additional investments to enhance its capacity in this regard.
“We are delighted to be the 1st MRO service provider in Africa with capability to perform modular level repair on the GEnx Engine, the latest GE engines which powers the most technologically advanced commercial aircraft, the Boeing 787. We are making additional investments to enhance our capability so as to fully overhaul of the GEnx engine before mid-2019,” he said.
“This newly developed capability will enable us to overhaul the GEnx engines of not just our Boeing 787 fleet but also those of other airlines in the world operating Boeing 787 aircraft powered by the GEnx engine,” he added.
