Ethiopia Requests UN to Lift Sanctions on Eritrea

Addis Ababa July 10/2018 Ethiopia officially submitted a request to the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres for the UN to lift sanctions it imposed on Eritrea.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed met the Secretary General here in Addis Ababa on Monday.

On his meeting with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Premier Abiy asked for the UN to lift the sanctions it imposed on Eritrea.

The United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres while visiting Addis Ababa on Monday said he believed the need for U.N. sanctions against Eritrea will no longer exist following its peace deal with Ethiopia.

It was recalled that the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1907, adopted on December 23, 2009 imposed an arms embargo on Eritrea.

The sanction includes travel bans on its leaders, and froze the assets of some of the country’s political and military officials after accusing the Eritrean government of supporting Al-Shabab in Somalia and reportedly refusing to withdraw troops from its disputed border with Djibouti, following a conflict in 2008.
