Minister Stresses Crucial Role of Manufacturing Sector for Dev’t

Addis Ababa June 11/2018 The role of the manufacturing sector in creating jobs, substituting imports and becoming globally competitive as well as earning foreign currency is indispensable, according to Ministry of Industry.

Opening a National Conference on Small and Medium Manufacturing Industry Development today, Industry Minister Ambachew Mekonnen said the manufacturing sector plays a big role in the development of the country.

It is,  crucial to strengthen the supports that have been extended to the sector in providing working capital and capital for equipment, inputs, technology, extension and market networking, he stated.

The Minister noted that the government has been carrying out various activities to build the sector by supporting small and medium manufacturing industries through various interventions.

Ambachew stressed that active involvement of the community, common understanding among stakeholders and leaders of small and medium manufacturing industries, and creating positive attitude towards the sector are important for realizing the objective of the sector.

He pointed out that Ethiopians should give priority for home products by buying “Made in Ethiopia” brands.

Federal Small and Medium Manufacturing Industry Development Agency Director-General, Asfaw Abebe said on his part more than 1.2 billion birr worth manufacturing machinery have been transferred to small and medium manufacturing industries.

According to him, the agency plans to create over 27,500 small and medium manufacturing industries by the end of the Second Growth and Transformation Plan and about 12,000 of these are already established.

Federal and regional government officials, representatives of small and medium manufacturing enterprises and other invited guests took part in the one-day conference.
